Announcing the Hapax Summer Contest

7/12/2016

Writers and artists: I am running a contest from now until 8/30 with cash prizes. You can read all about it on the Hapax guidelines page.

I'll be publishing a fall edition of Hapax based on this contest's entries, and then a winter edition with regular submissions. I'd like to recruit some staff members, but I want to build a solid base of readers and issues before I let others weigh in on publication decisions. I'm having a fantastic time anticipating the rest of 2016 and I'm going to take the victories as they come.

Hapax Will Be Out 7/13

I am finalizing the documentation for Hapax. It's been very important to me that I get it right the first time, and also that I learn the tools that will enable me to grow the magazine from the start.

InDesign does not seem as complicated as I had feared it would be, but it certainly has its quirks and I think it will take some experience.

I've made the cover for Hapax in Photoshop thanks to Walter Savage's art. I'm quite happy with how it looks. I'll, of course, be publishing an unaltered version within the magazine.

Now I just need to dive in, tackle KDP and publish on the web!

This weekend I'll be spending a lot of time crossing out tasks on the massive list generated by publishing a lit mag for the first time. I'm happy with the state of all the submissions and with the new rendering of the cover art, so all that's left is formatting tasks, figuring out Kindle publishing, and overall coherence.

I'm having fun even though it's a lot of stressful, busy-ish work. Because June is over, I can also look ahead to my goals for the second half of the year and turning my attention to some neglected areas that need attention.

But that doesn't mean my work on Hapax will be ending here, either--I have a contest planned that I need to generate materials for and promote, and of course the next round of submissions after that to look forward to.
